TL;DR
- A mixed alkaline container is planned as a ratio of sell-through, because the format mix sets the carton footprints and the footprints set how the container stacks.
- AA (LR6), AAA (LR03), C (LR14), D (LR20) and 9V (6LR61) all run at 1.5 V on the same zinc-manganese dioxide platform, so one order can cover them, but each format has its own carton, pack and curve.
- Alkaline ships by volume rather than payload: a published AAA cell weight of 11 g means a 48-piece retail pack carries about 528 g of cells, so weight rarely limits the load.
- Alkaline dry cells are not regulated as dangerous goods, so a mixed container avoids the Class 9 paperwork a lithium order would need.
- Fix the pack format, certificate set and QC protocol before production, and confirm the packing list, because carton dimensions and pieces per carton are what your forwarder needs.

A mixed container of AA, AAA, C, D and 9V alkaline cells is not one product in five sizes, it is one shipment with a ratio in it, and the ratio should come from sell-through rather than from the space left in the box. Most first orders in this category fail the same way: the buyer works out how many cells fit, orders a container’s worth of the format they know best, and discovers that the format customers actually walk in for is not the one they bought.
This article sets out the planning method we use with first-time buyers: start from the retail format, work out the unit mix from expected sell-through, translate that into cartons, and hand the forwarder a packing list they can build a loading plan from. Every specification quoted below comes from our own published pages, and where a number is our arithmetic we say so.
What Is Actually Inside a Mixed Alkaline Container
The five formats share one chemistry and one nominal voltage, which is why they can be made together, but they are not interchangeable units and do not share a carton. All are 1.5 V zinc-manganese dioxide dry cells: AA is LR6 (AM-3), AAA is LR03 (AM-4), C is LR14, D is LR20, and the 9 V block is 6LR61. The alkaline range also covers 12 V 23A and 27A types and the 4LR25 lantern cell, and the wider catalogue extends into rechargeable alkaline, button cells, zinc-carbon, lithium-ion, Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, USB and zinc-air.
The cell data differs by format, and it is published, so there is no reason to plan a mixed order on assumed weights. Take the AAA: the published data is 1.5 V, 1200 mAh, 11 g per cell, cylindrical, with an aluminium foil jacket and a model-table shelf time of 5 years, while the AA and AAA listing in the same catalogue describes a 10-year shelf life, an AA cell size of 14 by 50 mm, and discharge times of 400 minutes for AA and 150 for AAA.
Those numbers matter for loading. AAA packs into a small carton, D and C need a bigger footprint for the same unit count, and the 9 V block is a rectangular prism that behaves differently again on a pallet. When formats are mixed, the limiting factor is usually how many cartons stack in a stable pattern, so carton dimensions and the pallet plan are the numbers to ask for first.
Plan the Mix From Sell-Through, Not From Container Space
The right question is not “how many cells fit” but “how many cells do I need to cover demand until my next order”, and that second question is a distribution question while the first is a packing question. A practical sequence is to work out monthly sell-through per format in your market, convert that into units, apply a coverage window you are comfortable carrying, and only then divide the result between the formats and pack sizes you will import.
The retail formats in our catalogue are designed for exactly this shelf decision, and the 48-piece colour box for AA and AAA is where most importers start, because it sells as a unit rather than as loose cells. The same category pages describe the use cases behind the rest of the mix: C cells for toys and electronic devices, D cells for high-drain devices, and 9 V blocks for smoke alarms and remote controls. Those use cases tell you which formats move in which channel.
A useful sanity check is to convert retail packs into cell weight, because it tells you whether you have a volume problem or a weight problem. The published AAA cell weight is 11 g, so a 48-piece AAA pack carries 528 g of cells before the colour carton and shrink film. When a format produces a carton whose product weight is a small fraction of its volume, the container fills up long before the payload limit is reached, and the freight cost per unit is set by the space it occupies.
Quality and Paperwork to Settle Before Stuffing
For dry cells the certificate set is straightforward, and worth fixing in the purchase order rather than sorting out afterwards. Our alkaline batteries are certified to IEC 60086-1:2015 and IEC 60086-2:2015 and GB 7212-1998, and the AA and AAA listing carries CE, KC, RoHS and REACH declarations, with an MSDS for shipping. In Europe, battery and labelling obligations are set out in the Battery Directive 2006/66/EC and administered by the European Commission, and for North American cell dimensions and designations the reference is the National Electronic Distributors Association.
The transport position is the pleasant surprise, because alkaline dry cells are not treated as dangerous goods. The FAA’s batteries guidance for shippers sets out how dry cells are treated for air transport, and alkaline is a non-restricted item rather than the Class 9 cargo a lithium battery order requires. That removes a layer of paperwork and a layer of freight cost, and it is one of the quieter reasons dry cells still earn their place in a distributor’s range.
Quality control is where mixed orders earn their keep, because a leak from one cell damages the retail pack next to it. Our documented process runs from incoming material inspection and first-sample check through in-process sample inspection and bare-cell sample discharge to a 100 percent three-parameter automatic check and finished product inspection. The leakage work is specific: 60 degrees Celsius and 90 percent relative humidity for 30 days, 80 degrees Celsius for 20 days, 70 degrees for 30 days, and a room-temperature leakage rate below 0.005 percent over one year and 0.01 percent over two years. The formulation is mercury-free, gas generation is stated at around half the industry average, and the leakage protection is patented.
A Step-by-Step Plan for Your First Mixed Order
- Decide the format mix from your sell-through, and write the ratio down as units per format.
- Fix the retail pack for each format. Our 48-piece colour box for AA and AAA is the reference starting point, and other formats can be matched to it.
- Request the packing list: carton dimensions, pieces per carton, the pallet pattern, gross and net weight per carton, and the CBM of a carton. These five figures are what your forwarder needs for the loading plan and the weight check.
- Run the volume check with your forwarder using your real box type and the published cube figures. They do this quickly once they have the carton data.
- Run the weight check the same way, and note which constraint binds first.
- Align the order with production capacity and lead time. Our published figures are samples within 1 to 2 working days, an OEM order delivered 25 days after the deposit is received, and daily output of 150,000 pieces, with the packing confirmed before the production slot is fixed.
- Attach the certificate and QC set to the purchase order. IEC 60086-1 and 60086-2, GB 7212-1998, CE, RoHS, REACH and KC as applicable to your market, plus the MSDS and the leakage test protocol, and confirm the date code, remaining shelf life, barcode and artwork for your market.
- Confirm the commercial terms in the same order. Our published terms include EXW, FOB, C&F and CIF with L/C, 30 percent deposit and 70 percent before shipment, with Ningbo, Shanghai, Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian, Xiamen and other Chinese ports offered.
Five Mistakes in First Mixed Orders
- Ordering a container’s worth of one format. The cheapest cell is not the fastest-moving cell, and a container of the wrong format is inventory that will not move before the next shipment arrives.
- Planning the container before the carton. Without carton dimensions and pieces per carton, the loading plan is a guess, and the guess is usually optimistic by several pallets.
- Mixing formats without separating them in the load. Plan the mixed container as separated format blocks with a fixed pallet pattern for each, so it can be unloaded in the order your warehouse needs.
- Leaving the certificate set to the freight forwarder. Certification for a cell is quick to provide and slow to reconstruct after the container has sailed.
- Ignoring date coding on a long shelf-life product. A 10-year shelf life is only a selling point if the date code and the remaining shelf life are stated on the packing list.
Where We Fit Your First Order
We are a dry-cell manufacturer rather than a trader, and the factory figures behind that are published on our company profile. Ningbo Johnson New Eletek was founded in 2004, with fixed assets of about five million US dollars, a production workshop of 10,000 square metres, 200 skilled workshop staff and 8 fully automatic production lines, while the alkaline product pages describe 10 sets of automatic high-speed lines and daily output of 150,000 pieces. The factory sits in the Ningbo Qianwan New Area, Zhejiang, and the company profile is where you check who you are dealing with before you send a purchase order.
For a first mixed order, the catalogue breadth matters as much as the alkaline line itself. The alkaline category covers AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, the 12 V 23A and 27A types and the 4LR25 lantern cell, and the company also builds rechargeable alkaline, button cells, zinc-carbon, lithium-ion, Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, USB and zinc-air. For a distributor, that means the second and third containers need not come from a different supplier, so the QC relationship, the artwork process and the shipping routine stay in one place.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many AA, AAA, C, D and 9V cells should go in my first container?
That depends on sell-through rather than container space. Work out monthly demand per format, convert it to units, apply the coverage window you want to carry, then split the result by format and pack size. AAA and AA tend to move fastest in general merchandise, while C, D and 9V follow the applications those formats are built for.
What packing information do I need from the factory before I can plan a container?
Master carton dimensions, pieces per carton, the pallet pattern, gross and net weight per carton and the CBM of a carton. With those five, your forwarder can produce a loading plan and a weight check, and you can see whether volume or payload binds first.
Are alkaline batteries dangerous goods for shipping?
No, which is one of the practical advantages over lithium. Alkaline dry cells are non-restricted for transport, and the FAA’s batteries guidance for shippers sets out how dry cells are treated in air freight. Your forwarder still needs the MSDS and packing list, but you avoid the Class 9 documentation a lithium order would require.
Which certificates should a mixed alkaline order include?
For the cells, IEC 60086-1:2015 and IEC 60086-2:2015 with GB 7212-1998, plus the declarations your market requires such as CE, RoHS and REACH for Europe and KC where it applies. Add an MSDS for the shipment, and reference the leakage test protocol and QC procedure in the purchase order.
How long does a first mixed order take to produce and ship?
Our published lead times are samples within 1 to 2 working days and an OEM order delivered 25 days after the deposit is received, with packing confirmed before production is scheduled, and daily output of 150,000 pieces. The packing confirmation is the step that should not be rushed.
